Overview of In-Situ Recovery Methods in Alberta

The slide presentation available through the link below provides a comprehensive overview of the recovery methods being used in the major oil producing fields from Lloydminster to Peace River.  There are many excellent diagrams which illustrate these methods.  Among the methods covered are:

bullet

CHOPS - Cold Heavy Oil Production with Sands

bullet

CSS - Cyclic Steam Stimulation

bullet

SAGD - Steam Assisted Gravity Drainage

bullet

ES-SAGD - Expanding Solvent in Steam Assisted Gravity Drainage

bullet

VAPEX - Vapor Extraction

bullet

THAI - Toe Heel Air Injection

bullet

ET-DSP - Electro-Thermal Dynamic Stripping Process

Of particular interest are some excellent diagrams of SAGD drilling and pad design showing, among other things, how electro-magnetic imaging is used to keep well bores straight and only a few meters apart while drilling more than one kilometer long horizontal wells.

The presentation was made to the Petroleum Society of CIM, Lloydminster (Heavy Oil) Section in September 2007 by K. C. Yeung, Suncor Energy Inc.
