Pole Rigs:
The first service rigs in the Lloydminster area
were known as "pole rigs". These rigs used two pieces of casing one inside the
other for an extendible mast. The mast was raised with cables and anchored with guy lines.

They were later built on small single axle
trucks. There was no hydraulic system or air compressor to run power tongs, tubing slips,
blowout preventers or winches. There was no derrick so all the pipe and rods were handled
off the ground. It was normal to work without any blowout prevention equipment, sometimes
a large valve known as an Orbit Valve was installed.
